Marcia K Murphy & Gary J Northrup Scholarship

Marcia created this scholarship in remembrance of her partner, Gary J. Northrup, who had a satisfying and successful 40-year career in the Merchant Marines but was never able to fulfill his aspiration to attend college to become an educator of history. It is Marcia’s hope that with her generous gift, a student will be able to fulfill the dream Gary was never able to accomplish. To qualify for the Marcia K. Murphy & Gary J. Northrup Scholarship, a student must:

1. Be an incoming first year student
2. Be a New York State resident
3. First preference shall be given to students from the Central New York region (defined as Oneida, Madison, Herkimer, Onondaga or Oswego Counties)
4. Student must be a declared Social Studies Education major and have a deep passion to teach History, and must possess financial need, as determined by the Financial Aid Office

Scholarship may be renewable for an additional three years provided the student is in good academic standing and remains a declared Social Studies Education major. The scholarship may be renewed for an additional year if the recipient pursues a Master’s degree in Education at Potsdam. The scholarship shall be rescinded if a recipient fails to complete a full year of study, fails to remain in good academic standing, or fails to remain as a Social Studies Education major.
